As we near the end of the Tony Blair Premiership, here's a reminder of what it was like in the days leading up to Margaret Thatcher's resignation. The man who gave her the fatal push was her longest serving Minister Sir Geoffrey Howe. His resignation speech triggered a chain of events which ultimately led to Margaret Thatcher's resignation as Prime Minister. This clip is from the BBC Nine O'Clock News.

I'm still trying to work out why she signed the SEA? You say look at her Bruges speech. Many of the criticisms in it were policies and institutions directly provided for by the SEA she signed. So when she signed the SEA, was she wrong about it (did she change her mind between 1986 and 1988?), did she misunderstand what it provided for? Or was she a liar?If it is any of these three reasons (and it has to be), then surely that violates many of the assumptions her supporters make about her.

At the end of her reign the number of the working class who voted for her was up from the beginning of her reign. Remember Tony Blair talking about Mondeo man?

Thatcher was an evil bitch who impoverished the working class.

No excuse for being rotten to him for years on end. Why didn't she sack him earlier if he was too pro-Europe for her liking? He'd always been pro-EU and never made any bones about it. Yet she kept him on as Foreign Secretary.

So why did she sign the SEA in 1986, which explicitly paved the way for economic and monetary union? That and a whole host of other powers over justice, police and home affairs? Mrs Thatcher did more than any other Prime Minister to grant the EU sovereignty and power at the expense of the national parliaments of member states? And, then she had the brass neck to bitterly complain about it, when it is something she sanctioned when she signed the Single European Act.

According to Charles Powell she thought Howe was having too much fun playing in the sandpit of the E.U.

She wanted to create a free trading zone in the E.U. not a superstate

If you read her book 'Statecraft' she advocates leaving the E.U.
